On 9 February, it is 100 years since Count Wedel Jarlsberg signed the Svalbard Treaty on behalf of Norway. The Governor of Svalbard, Svalbard Museum and UNIS mark the 100th anniversary with a seminar, cake and men’s choir singing.

We would like to celebrate the 100th anniversary for the Svalbard Treaty and invite the people of Longyearbyen to a celebration at UNIS.
Program:
- Welcome by Kjerstin Askholt, Governor of Svalbard
- Opening by Thor Kleppen Sættem, State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Public Security
- “Svalbard’s national affiliation and legal relations from the discovery in 1596 to World War I” by Svalbard historian Per Kyrre Reymert
- “The Interest Game about Svalbard 1915-1925” by Dr. Thor Bjørn Arlov, associate professor of history at UNIS
- Break: Treaty cake and song by Store Norske Mandskor
- “The Svalbard Treaty” by Kristian Jervell, Director of the Department of Justice in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Questions from the audience, moderated by Tora Hultgreen, director of Svalbard Museum
There will be opportunities to ask questions after the lectures.
The event is open to all. The lectures will be in Norwegian.
