Tiny technology to outwit deadly winter threat

Local experts and organisations have developed a new avalance monitor system to mitigate a growing danger.

The team at the Arctic Safety Centre at UNIS and Telenor Svalbard have recently tested new low-cost and low-power sensors in areas overlooking Longyearbyen which are prone to avalanches. The results show that the new monitoring system, using narrowband IoT, can measure and transfer more accurate snow data and operate in the field for a longer time than older systems.
