Arctic Safety Center courses

The Arctic Safety Centre (ASC) at UNIS offers courses that focus on safety management, human performance, risk handling, and emergency preparedness to ensure safe operations in the extreme Arctic environment. Due to climate change, the natural environment in the high north is rapidly changing. This makes it essential to enhance skills and share experiences on how to operate safely and sustainably in the high Arctic. The knowledge gained from these courses is both general and specific, making it highly relevant for safety and risk management worldwide. With its prime location and extensive experience in Arctic safety, Svalbard is the perfect place for these courses.

There are three scientific courses at the ASC on Master’s level and PhD level which have shared lectures. These are

• AS-302/AS-802 Safety management in the Arctic
• AS-303/AS-803 Emergency preparedness and response int the Arctic
• AS-304/AS-804 Risk handling in the Arctic operational context

In addition, we offer a bachelor course of Arctic Nature Guide, (AS-203 arcitc safety and field leadership) which is in cooperation with the University of Tromsø (UiT) and the study program is coordinated by them.  We also provide practical courses such as AS-101 Arctic survival and safety, for externals as well as students and staff at UNIS.
